For my first task in the photography module I was given the Appropriation brief. To be honest I’m not sure exactly what means but from the Richard Prince picture it seems to mean taking someone else’s picture and changing the context of it and making it something different.

Another example of this is with Banksy’s appropriation of Andy Warhol’s image of Marilyn Monroe.

So from seeing these two I felt confident that I knew what to do when it came to creating my own images.

For my first appropriation work, I used the famous image of the builders working on a building in New York. I chose to take this picture out of context by inserting a picture of a crowd at a festival/concert underneath them making it look like the builders are siting above the crowd waving down to the people rather than waving at the person taking the picture.

For my second appropriation work I decided to use the jumpman logo from the Jordan brand. I chose to put a money bag where the ball should be in his hand as Michael Jordan has made more money from the brand then he did from play basketball. I also chose to have money falling down from the bag as the brand is very expensive, for example a pair of their trainers costs anywhere from £100-£210. I also chose to do this because many famous rappers are seen to be wearing the brands clothing and trainers. Rappers Drake and Future even release a song titled ‘Jumpman’ referring to the brand. This will only make the brand bigger than it already is with more people being introduced to it by popular music meaning that the money made will continue to rise and rise.

In this photo I got the silhouette of the New York City skyline and put the Red Bull logo onto it as New York is also known as the city that never sleeps and Red Bull is a very well known energy drink. I also put the tag line in the same font and colour of the Red Bull logo above the silhouette of the city.
